Our lives are shaped in many ways by spinning events such as Earth spinning around the Sun, or shift workers switching between night and day. Some are obvious while others aren’t.
Most people are aware, for example, that the Earth revolves around its axis at least once every 24 hours. Scientists have been able to determine the slight fluctuations in the speed of rotation using atomic clocks. This fluctuation causes the solar day to appear shorter or longer than it should be, and the atomic clocks that keep regular time must be tuned periodically. This change is referred to as a leap second.
Another instance of a rotational event is the Coriolis effect, which is the periodic tilting of the Earth’s axis while it orbits around the Sun. This movement is what shapes weather patterns, and why rides in fun parks like Ferris wheels and carousels must have a sturdy side to side bar called an axle.
Similarly, job rotation exposes employees to a variety of workplaces and roles which can enhance their capabilities and professional growth. The frequent change of shifts can cause disruption to the team’s dynamics, and stress can be caused by employees trying to adapt to the new conditions. To reduce stress companies can implement strategies such as open communication and wellness programs to create an environment of health and wellbeing for their employees. They can also utilize scheduling software to seamlessly manage shift changes.
